What are Digital Twins?

Digital twins are virtual representations of physical assets, systems, or processes. They are created using data from sensors, cameras, and other sources of information that capture the real-time performance of the physical asset.
For example, a digital twin of a wind turbine can be used to simulate its behavior under different wind conditions, to optimize its efficiency, and minimize downtime. A digital twin of a manufacturing process can be used to simulate the impact of different variables on the quality of the product, to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the process, and to optimize the use of resources.

How to create Digital Twins in Webee's platform:

Step 1: Creating the Asset and its basic information

To create a new asset, simply click on the “create new asset” button and fill in the basic details as shown:

  • Asset Name: V150 6.0MW IEC-S
  • Asset Type: Wind Turbine
  • Asset ID: WTZ01-08-6MW
Step 2: Setting up the asset’s key attributes

Here’s where we’ll define the key variables that will compose our digital twin. In this case, we’ll be monitoring Engine Temperature (ºC), Acceleration (X,Y,Z in m/S), Ambient Temperature (ºC), Ambient Humidity (%RH), and Smoke Detection (Obscuration/meter).

Step 3: Defining Data Sources

Each of the asset’s variables can come from a plethora of sources. For our use case, we will gather the data from three LoRaWAN sensors:

  • Engine Temperature and Acceleration sensor
  • Ambient Temperature and Humidity sensor
  • Smoke Detection sensor
Step 4: Defining normal operating parameters

Once our sensors and units of measurement have been properly set up, we can quickly establish minimum/maximum operating thresholds for each variable. In this case:

  • Operating Environmental Temperature: -20 / +45ºC
  • Operating Environmental Humidity: < 97%
  • Acceleration: 3-25 m/s
  • Engine Surface Temp: < 55ºC
  • Smoke Detection: 15.5% obs/m OR temp > 60ºC
Step 5: Customizing data visualization

With everything set up, a variety of visualization options are available for each variable such as different kinds of charts (line, bar, pie) as well as badges and historical log components that are readily available out of the box.

Step 6: Creating alerts

Creating alerts that can be sent out via SMS, Email or HTTP is a breeze. Set up triggers with just a few clicks and begin sending out alerts to any stakeholder immediately.
